Gazette.com reports that CenturyLink Inc. is preparing for an era without the product it and its predecessor companies provided through most of their history: the home landline.
The Louisiana-based company, which provides telephone service to Colorado Springs and much of the Front Range, will soon have to make its living as one of many providers of internet access and related services, including television, to consumers and data, web hosting and information technology services to businesses. CenturyLink lists broadband access first among the communications, information technology and other products it sells – ahead of voice (telephone) services – in its one-paragraph description of its business on the company’s website.
“Having broadband connectivity is what drives our reputation as a company. We are connecting people to the power of the digital world,” said Guy Gunther, who arrived last month in Denver as CenturyLink’s vice president of operations for Colorado from a similar post in Arizona. “The share of homes with voice service is declining. It is still part of the business, but what has changed is how it is delivered. People like the reliability of traditional phone service, but many of them want that service provided over the internet.”
